gsmarena_003Apple’s domination of the smartphone market is set to be secured with the release of the new iPhone 3GS. While other companies like Nokia are eager to make their mark the iPhone 3GS looks set to build on Apple’s reputation for ease of use and intuition. The Nokia N97, one of the main competitors to Apple offers some impressive specifications but is not as pleasurable to use as the iPhone.

The N97’s pressure sensitive resistive touchscreen technology falls short of the capacitive model used by the iPhone. The iPhone’s superior sensitivity provides and elegance and ease of use that puts the N97 to shame. Nokia’s decision to include a physical slide-out keyboard makes the N97 bulky by comparison to the slender iPhone.

The N97’s RM 11 CPU clocks at 434 MHz with 128 MB RAM compared to the iPhone 3GS’ ARM Cortex A8 processor clocking at 600 MHz with 256 MB RAM, making the iPhone speedier and more powerful than the N97.

Both phones are aimed at heavy internet users; however the iPhone’s browser is superior to that of the N97 which makes for an awkward browsing experience. The iPhone’s 3G Band supports 7.2 Mbps whereas the N97 only supports 3.6 Mbps speed. Despite this, the iPhone 3GS still lacks the support of Java and Flash found in its Nokia rival.

Apple are still at the forefront of the smartphone industry, but as some reviewers have noted, the iPhone 3GS has not improved upon the iPhone 3G to the same extent as the ladder did to the original iPhone.
